The Dawning of a New Day…

My favorite part of the day is an early morning sunrise. Away from the bustling city and in the quiet of nature. As the still of the night gives way to the symphony of birds and other animals as they awaken from a restful night’s sleep, the sky is filled with an absolutely amazing kaleidoscope of colors played out before my eyes.

The sky starts off as a velvet blanket punctuated with brilliant stars at their brightest display, just before dawn. Like tiny points of silver they contrast with the night sky. Then ever so slowly, the jet black sky starts to turn to a deep midnight blue on the horizon. It is my time to be amazed. It is as if God himself is treating me to the most brilliant display of his color pallet. With the sounds of birds in the background, it thrills like the very best of the Oscar candidates for best song of the year. The midnight blue starts to give way to lighter and lighter shades of blue. Depending on the sky, there are splashes of red’s, pinks, oranges, yellows and as they brighten, they allow my amazed eyes to feast on every color imaginable in the surrounding landscape.

While this show may seem slow, it is actually amazingly fast. If you don’t believe me, try to capture the magic of the moment with a camera. If you wait a few seconds too long, the show has changed. That is not all bad, because as you are lamenting the loss of a spectacular shot, an even more spectacular shot appears, but you had better capture the moment in the here and now, because it is not going to wait on you.

This so reminds me of life itself. You are constantly being presented with golden opportunities, but you must be prepared to recognize them. You must be prepared to capture them in the here and now or you will lose them. Don’t be disheartened, but you must prepare yourself for the next opportunity, least you miss the next one in the chute.

Life is prepared to offer you the best of everything, but you need to prepare yourself. Prepare yourself to recognize the opportunity and prepare yourself to act. The difference between acting and watching is like being a spectator or a participant. While it is a wonder to watch, it is so much more rewarding to actually get in the game. What can be more exciting than that? Winning the game!

Watching the morning splendor is about as close as I can come to actually sitting down and talking to God himself. He is showing me what is possible. The splendor of the day is a treat to every creature that is able to comprehend what is going on.

While most people are putting their minds into overdrive with wonder at the thought of what is occurring, there are people wondering what happens when the weather ain’t so good. Let me tell you from the point of view of a person that has experienced the prognosis of a life expectancy of 6 to 10 months to live. There are no bad days. Oh, there are days that are prettier than others, but you quickly learn that the rain is the source of the most beautiful flowers possible, the most magnificent trees possible and even the abundant life that I enjoy watching so much. You learn that the rain is responsible for washing the air and leaving it so clean that we can smell the freshness after it is over.

You quickly learn that the snow is a beautiful blanket that stores water for our use when there are no rain drops available. You learn that the coldness of the winter is what regulates the abundant insects that we curse during the summer. You soon realize that nature is a delicate balancing game. Each day is a joy to behold because it is filled with wonders of its own.

The amazing show that I have just seen is only enhanced by natural events t that take place around us. The pictures that are featured in this post are so because of forest fires and the resultant pollution that they put in to the air. They cause an enhanced display of the reds and are a special treat to me.

It was a special treat to me to stand along the mighty Columbia River and watch the sun rise to greet me and treat me to my own individual light show. To hear the birds, in this case the primary actors were the ducks and geese that seemed to put on a display just for me.

The significance is that I was watching a new day come into being. New things always have a certain magic. This is the first part of a post on Resolutions. We greet the new day with a renewed vigor. We greet the New Year with vigor and go through rituals designed to make a new beginning, but as I stand trying to capture the magic of the moment with a camera, so do many people try to capture the magic of a new day, a New Year with a resolve to capture the magic in a bottle.
